How many weeks is each volume supposed to take for instruction?
Each unit (text) generally sustains at least three and up to 6â7 sessions, depending on which activities are chosen, especially as extension and curriculum connections.
So, at level K, there are three volumes, each with three stories and one poem, for a total of twelve texts.
So, most often, the K level sustains Shared InquiryTM learning experiences for about 9â 14 weeks. We recommend these occur somewhat close together in time, but JGB doesn't have to be scheduled every day or every week.
JGB also helps teachers and students learn how to engage in productive Shared Inquiry with other rich texts. We have some of these in our Get Started kits, and can help identify and create curriculum for others, if desired.
it typically a second-half-of-school-year resource since some students are turning into readers?
This varies, depending on the needs and prior experiences of the students, as well as the learning philosophy of the school. All the JGB texts are intended to be read aloud to students, especially at the Kâ1 level. So current decoding skill is not an issue with regard to using JGB.
We would be happy to consult on timing for using JGB with K students, and would consider factors such as students' prior experiences, especially working in groups, their attention spans, other curriculum resources, etc. See also the note above about frequency of use and scheduling.
